This homemade Salisbury Steak is a hearty and flavorful dish featuring juicy beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. It’s an easy, comforting meal that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water, for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Patties:

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.

2. Cook the Patties:

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

3. Make the Mushroom Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter and sauté the onions and mushrooms for about 5 minutes, until softened.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  4. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the gravy thickens.

4. Combine & Serve:

  1. Return the patties to the skillet and spoon the gravy over them. Simmer for 5 more minutes.
  2. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles. Enjoy!
