Ingredients
Scale
For the Sandwich:
- 1 lb (450 g) deli-style roast beef, thinly sliced

- 4 slices provolone cheese or Swiss cheese
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onions:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil or butter.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown, about 8–10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Make the Au Jus (Optional):
- In a small saucepan, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Heat over medium heat until warmed through. Pour into small bowls for dipping, if desired.
3. Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) or use a broiler on low.
- Split the sandwich rolls and place them on a baking sheet.
- Layer slices of roast beef on the bottom half of each roll. Top with caramelized onions and a slice of cheese.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven for 5–7 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the bread is lightly toasted.
4. Add Toppings:
- Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Add optional toppings like lettuce, tomato, or condiments.
- Close the sandwiches and serve warm, with au jus on the side if prepared.
Notes
- Bread Options: Use sourdough, baguette, or even a crusty Italian loaf for a different texture.
- Make It Spicy: Add a drizzle of hot sauce or pepper jack cheese for extra heat.
- Storage: If you have leftovers, store components separately to keep the bread from getting soggy.
