Description

Baking French bread at home is easier than you might think! This classic loaf has a golden crust and a soft, airy interior, perfect for sandwiches, soups, or simply enjoying with butter. With just a few ingredients and a little patience, you’ll have fresh bread that rivals any bakery.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)

For Baking:

  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.

Step 2: First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1 ½ hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 3: Shape the Loaves

  1. Punch down the dough to release air and divide it into two equal portions.
  2. Roll each portion into a rectangle, then tightly roll it up into a log shape. Pinch the seams to seal.
  3. Place the loaves on a parchment-lined baking sheet, seam-side down.

Step 4: Second Rise

  1. Cover the loaves with a clean towel and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 5: Prepare and Bake

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and 1 tbsp water. Brush this mixture over the loaves for a shiny crust.
  2. Use a sharp knife to make 3–4 diagonal slashes on the top of each loaf.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.

Step 6: Cool and Serve

  1. Remove the loaves from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftover bread in an airtight bag at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze the loaves for up to 3 months.
  • Steam Boost: For an extra crispy crust, place a pan of hot water on the lower oven rack during baking or mist the loaves with water before baking.
  • Add-Ins: For a twist, mix in herbs, garlic, or cheese into the dough.
